EUpALS partners in HEREDITARY – a European research project on multimodal data integration for advanced federated AI analytics
From January 2024, EUpALS became partner in project HEREDITARY, acronym of ‘Heterogeneous semantic data integration for the gut-brain interplay’.

HEREDITARY is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation topic “Better integration and use of health-related real-world and research data, including genomics, for improved clinical outcomes”.

HEREDITARY explores changes in how we detect diseases, prepare treatments, and learn more about medicine by creating a strong, secure multimodal system that combines different types of health data, including genetic information.

The multimodal system follows privacy laws across different countries. It consists of five essential
components that operate in close collaboration, from processing data safely and connecting different
types of information to making the data easier to understand.
Using advanced AI analysis tools, HEREDITARY will help find new risk factors and treatment responses,
with a focus on diseases like those affecting the brain and gut microbiome. By linking large amounts of
data from various sources, HEREDITARY helps doctors, researchers, and decision-makers better
understand these diseases and create more effective treatments.
The consortium consists of 18 partners from ten European countries and one partner from United States:

Ontotext, CNAG, SURF, Radboud UMC, Observa, FundaciÓn Empresa Universidad Gallega (FEUGA),
Unicersità degli Studi di Torino (UNITO), Aalborg Universitet (AAU), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU
Leuven), Technische Universität Graz (TUGRAZ), FundaciÓ Centre de RegulaciÓ Genòmica (CRG-CERCA),
Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL), European Organization for Professionals and People with ALS
(EUpALS), Haute Ecole Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale (HESSO), and University of Colorado (UCD).
In HEREDITARY, EUpALS is involved in the work package Citizen Science and Public Engagement,
developing Health Social Labs. Also we are involved in the work package Exploitation, Innovation,
Communication and Dissemination. Furthermore we provide advice, input and feedback to the project
partners in charge of data analysis for the use case ALS
